Transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-beta 1), originally described in 1983, is the first member of the TGF-beta family. A number of closely related proteins designated TGF-beta 2-5 has been recognized. Since then, TGF-beta has been found to have a plethora of effects, such as regulation of cell growth, proliferation, differentiation, adhesion, migration, and apoptosis. Recent findings indicate that TGF-beta and other morphogens, such as BMP and Hedgehog, also serve as axon guidance molecules during development of the nervous system. TGF-beta's dual role as a tumor suppressor and promoter has also been discovered.
